Attention Duck Hunters - $3/Box Steel Shot Ammo

1 Attachment(s)
Expires 11/8/2008

Winchester Steel Shot, 4-pack
12ga
3"
1 1/8 oz
#2 shot

Out the door my total was $27.04 for 4 boxes (100 rounds).
I used the $10 coupon.

PLUS, there is a $15 rebate (up to 5 boxes, $75) per 4-pack.
So, after rebate my total will be $12.04. That's $3.01 / box after tax.

That is unbeatable.
I suppose these are approx $11 / box ammo.

I carried one 4-pack to the car. Went back into the store and did it again.
Rinse & Repeat.

Remington is having a sale on all their ammo too.

7.62 x 39 Wolf ammo is $5.99.
Pick up 4 boxes plus a pack of gum or whatever it takes to reach $25 total, subtract $10 for the coupon and you're looking at about $200 / case (25% below Ammoman.com price).

Is steel shot harder on the barrel of your gun???

Yes. It's also less dense, so it doesn't hold it's velocity as well.

However, if you're hunting in or near wetlands, it's mandated that you use 'non toxic' shot, and steel is cheaper than the other types of non toxic.

Edit:

Realistically, steel isn't going to hurt your bbl. I've shot thousands of rounds of it with no problem. It definetly isn't as hard on a bbl as buckshot.

I see .......

I got me about 6 boxes of #4 27 pellet heading this way after one of you posts..... seems like really good stuff :ok:

While I was there I saw shells that had up to 41 pellets packed in there...are those too small to be as effective as the 27 ???

My duck hunting days are long behind me. I haven't hunted duck in over 20 years, but I remember using #4 bird shot which provides many more pellets than #2. It worked well as no shots were taken over 40 yards, if that.

Twisted Avator - - do you realize the difference between buck shot and bird shot? There is #4 buck shot and there is #4 bird shot and they have far different diameter pellets. Buck shot is never steel, always lead.

TA, I wouldn't advise anything under #4buck for distances greater than 15 feet.

Keep in mind that they make 12ga in 2 /34, 3", and 3 1/2" shells. I don't know what your shotgun is chambered for, but it'll say it on the bbl.

41 pellets sounds like T shot or something, which is between regular birdshot and buckshot, and used for really long shots on geese and maybe turkeys (never have hunted turkey:bear_cry:).

LG, I'm not nearly as mad at those danged ducks as I once was either. The thought of hunting them still sounds good, but when it comes down to getting up at 4AM and slogging through the muck in 35degree weather, I usually end up staying home.

My boys will be old enough to drag me out in a few years, though!

Libertarian_Guard and eat_beef, we should form an ex-duck hunters club! Cold and wet doesn't appeal to me nearly as much as it did 20 years ago!

Steel shot uses a special wad cup that protects the barrel from the steel shot....that said, some manufacturers made special "steel shotl" barrels.

The steel shot compresses differently as compared to lead shot...so the choke of the barrel is different for lead and steel shots. Lead is softer and deforms easily...the deformed pellets will increase a shot pattern size.....so for a given choke...steel will pattern a tighter group....steel will have a higher percentage of shot in a given area as compared to lead.

The store I was in had BB Shot and #2 Shot. I normally hunt ducks with #4 shot. But, at these prices I wasn't going to hesitate to grab a couple 4-packs of #2 Shot.

Some recall the days of hunting water fowl with lead shot. Back then things were a lot of fun. You could use a smaller sized shot and still get the job done.

Today, with steel shot, you have to really place your shot. It's not uncommon to see wounded ducks swim off hundreds of yards and go unclaimed. This is especially true of diver ducks. Those are near impossible to catch after they've been wounded. Even a great retriever has a hard time.

I too have shot thousands of rounds of steel ammo through the same barrel and have never experienced any issues. The only issues come from the operator (me) and the best cure for this is liquid barrel straightener :coolbeer:

One last note regarding #4 Lead Shot 2 3/4". There really is no better all around shell than this. Whether it's a crow at 40 yards or a skunk running from your trash cans, the #4 is hard to beat. I'd hate to be at the receiving end of said shell.

Anyone ( besides myself ) ever unload on a mud hen, just out of frustration for comming up empty.

Bwahahaha, No, not me, Never!

4 of us once shot down a small tree after hiking a mile through the brush to jump an empty pond. I also once 'killed' a decoy out of frustration.:bear_w00t:

You would have taken normal embarrassment to a whole new level had that decoy "got away."
